If you’ve read about Dick Proenneke or watched Alone in the Wilderness, a visit to his cabin puts a real place to the story. His small log cabin sits on the shore of Upper Twin Lake, surrounded by the mountains of Lake Clark National Park.

The place behind the story
Richard “Dick” Proenneke built his cabin by hand and recorded years of life at Twin Lakes in journals and film. Seeing the cabin in person gives you a closer look at his craftsmanship and the place he chose to call home.
During the summer, park staff offer cabin tours. Access depends on the site’s opening hours and conditions, so we’ll help coordinate your visit with the flight operator.
The cabin is a historic site to visit, rather than overnight accommodation. Take your time, stay on the paths, and leave everything as you found it.

From your anchorage to Twin Lakes
A floatplane can come to where Odyssey is anchored to pick you up for the day. It’s a pretty special way to start an outing, with a flight into the mountains and time ashore at the cabin before returning to your sailing trip.
We work with the independent flight operator to arrange the pickup location and timing. Pickups at the boat depend on weather and suitable landing conditions, and the pilot makes the flying decisions.
